ProPublica, a nonprofit newsroom, is dedicated to investigating abuses of power and increasing diversity within its staff and the journalism community. ProPublica has grown to 193 full-time employees and expanded its resources by hiring a talent acquisition manager to refine the hiring process. The Diversity Committee, composed of over 50 staff volunteers, works on initiatives pitched and run by the staff. ProPublica's journalism addresses important issues like abortion restrictions and systemic failures in the Department of Veterans Affairs, resulting in policy changes and commitments to improvement. They also partner with news organizations, influencing legislation regarding real estate deals and investigations into the displacement of Black communities. In 2024, over half of the finalists for positions were women or from racial/ethnic groups other than solely non-Hispanic white. New initiatives include strengthening fair hiring practices and adding resources to support ProPublicans. ProPublica actively builds the pipeline for investigative journalism through programs and partnerships, focusing on recruiting talent and promoting inclusion and retention. The organization is committed to salary transparency, fair compensation, and an inclusive internal culture, publishing salary ranges and welcoming new hires with support.
