What to know about counterprotests to Trump's June 14 parade

Protestors are planning to take to the streets and community hubs nationwide on June 14 in what is expected to be the largest single-day anti-President Trump rally since the start of the administration. The movement, called No Kings, will run counter to Trump's multimillion dollar military parade in D.C. Organizers describe No Kings as a nationwide day of defiance, with the goal of rejecting authoritarianism. More than 100 pro-democracy advocacy groups are partnering to organize the No Kings events, which will take place in over 1,500 cities across all 50 states and commonwealths. The protests are expected to draw millions of people, with organizers estimating a large turnout. The No Kings movement is a response to Trump's proposed military parade, which is estimated to cost the U.S. Army $25 to $45 million. Trump proposed the military parade to coincide with his 79th birthday and the U.S. Army's 250th anniversary. Notably, there will be no organized protest in Washington, D.C., with organizers choosing to focus on creating contrast rather than conflict. The decision to hold No Kings events in every city but D.C. is a deliberate choice to keep the focus on contrast and not give the Trump administration an opportunity to stoke conflict. The No Kings movement is the latest in a series of anti-Trump protests, including the Hands Off! protest in April, which drew at least 3.5 million people.
