What to know about suspect in fire at Gov. Josh Shapiro's residence

Cody Balmer, 38, was denied bail after allegedly breaking into Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro's mansion and setting fire to it. He faces charges including attempted murder and terrorism, following an initial court appearance. The incident occurred while Shapiro and his family were inside and were safely evacuated. Balmer is accused of using Molotov cocktails, causing significant damage, particularly in the dining and piano rooms. Shapiro expressed gratitude to first responders. State police will review the security breach to prevent future incidents, with FBI assistance in the investigation. Balmer's ex-girlfriend alerted police after he confessed, according to a probable cause affidavit. Balmer admitted harboring hatred towards Shapiro and claimed he intended to harm him physically. Surveillance footage shows Balmer scaling a fence, breaking windows, and starting two fires. Authorities recovered evidence including gasoline-filled bottles and gloves. Balmer has a history of previous convictions and a pending assault case. His mother claims he has bipolar disorder and schizophrenia. District Attorney Fran Chardo indicated that Balmer could also face federal charges. The investigation is ongoing, with updates expected.
