Why Do U.S. Models of the iPhone 18 Pro Max, and Only U.S. Models of the 18 Pro Max, Use Qualcomm Cellular Modems Instead of Apple’s Own Superior C2 Modem?
Apple's iPhone 18 Pro utilizes the C2 modem globally. However, iPhone 18 Pro Max models outside the U.S. also feature the C2 modem. U.S. iPhone 18 Pro Max models are the sole exception, equipped with a Qualcomm modem. Apple has not officially explained this discrepancy in modem usage. Speculation suggests this may be to fulfill a contract with Qualcomm. This contract obligated Apple to use Qualcomm modems through 2026. The C2 modem enables ultra-fast mmWave 5G in the U.S. Previous Apple modems did not support this, whereas Qualcomm modems had for years. Apple claims the C2 offers faster uploads and 15% better energy efficiency than the C1X. The author believes Apple has now caught up with Qualcomm on mmWave support. Furthermore, Apple has arguably surpassed Qualcomm in energy efficiency since the C1's introduction. The most plausible reason for the U.S. Pro Max using Qualcomm is to minimally satisfy their agreement.
