Xiaomi EV Involved in First Fatal Autopilot Crash

Xiaomi is cooperating with police after a fatal accident involving its SU7 electric vehicle on March 29. The incident marks the first major accident involving the SU7 sedan, which has been outselling Tesla's Model 3 since December. Xiaomi's shares dropped 5.5% on Wednesday, underperforming the Hang Seng Tech index. The company has handed over driving and system data to the authorities. Initial information shows the car was in Navigate on Autopilot mode before the accident, moving at 116 kph. The driver took over and tried to slow down, but collided with a cement pole at 97 kph. The accident in Anhui province killed the driver and two passengers. Xiaomi's data submitted to police shows the Navigate on Autopilot system issued a risk warning seconds before the collision. The car was a standard version of the SU7, which has less-advanced smart driving technology without LiDAR. Local media reported that the car caught fire after the collision, although Xiaomi did not mention this in its statement.
