10 Years of the SRE book: Announcing the second edition of "Site Reliability Engineering”

A decade after the original release, Google is publishing a completely rewritten second edition of their Site Reliability Engineering book. This update is necessary due to profound shifts in the computing landscape, including the rise of AI, microservices, and multi-cloud. The first edition focused on early cloud adoption and monolithic architectures, whereas the new edition addresses the challenges of maintaining reliability in complex, modern, globally scaled systems. Practices like SLOs, monitoring, automation, and reliability testing have matured significantly over the past ten years. For instance, SLOs have evolved from basic availability metrics to user-centric, multi-tiered systems with automated enforcement. Monitoring has transformed from static dashboards to leveraging OpenTelemetry and distributed tracing for quick root cause analysis.Automation has moved from custom scripts to declarative infrastructure as code and internal developer platforms. Reliability testing now includes continuous resilience checks and live production canary verification. Capacity management has shifted to dynamic auto-scaling and cloud FinOps alignment. Organizational models for SRE have also diversified beyond dedicated teams. The new edition also delves into the dual role of SRE and AI, explaining how SRE supports AI infrastructure and how AI enhances operational reliability. It covers operating large language models and using AI tools to improve incident triage and postmortem generation. Despite technological advancements, the core principles of SRE and the importance of a reliability-focused culture remain unchanged. This rewritten edition is intended as a definitive roadmap for the next era of production systems.
