3 US Warships Dispatched To Haiti As Part Of Campaign Against Drug Traffickers

The United States has deployed three warships to Haiti under Operation Southern Spear, a mission focused on combating drug trafficking in the Caribbean. This operation is driven by the U.S. commitment to Haitian security and stability, as stated by the U.S. Embassy. The warships, including a destroyer and Coast Guard cutters, are working in partnership to ensure a safer Haiti. Operation Southern Spear has targeted drug smuggling boats, with strikes occurring since September 2025. Haiti has faced significant political and economic instability since the 2021 assassination of President Jovenel Moïse. Gang violence has become rampant, leading the U.S. to designate certain gangs as foreign terrorist organizations. The U.S. National Security Strategy calls for expanded operations against drug cartels to maintain stability in the Western Hemisphere. The Transitional Presidential Council, formed in April 2024, has been marked by allegations of corruption and a worsening security situation. The U.S. has revoked visas for some council members due to alleged gang involvement. The United Nations authorized a Gang Suppression Force and the U.S. and Canada have secured personnel and resources.
