5 States Limit Soda, Candy For SNAP Recipients To Curb Obesity

Five states are implementing new restrictions on Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits, limiting the purchase of unhealthy items like soda and candy. These states, including Indiana, Iowa, Nebraska, Utah, and West Virginia, are acting through waivers approved by the USDA. These restrictions are part of the "Make America Healthy Again" initiative, targeting obesity and diabetes among SNAP recipients. This initiative is spearheaded by figures such as Robert F. Kennedy Jr. The changes impact around 1.4 million SNAP participants and aim to improve public health by promoting healthier food choices. SNAP currently provides benefits to 42 million Americans at a cost of $100 billion annually. The specific restrictions vary by state, with some banning soda, energy drinks, and candy. These restrictions represent a departure from historical SNAP practices that allowed for broad access to food items. This shift is driven by concerns about high obesity rates among SNAP participants. The USDA is incentivizing states to apply for these waivers. The waivers are initially valid for two years, with the possibility of extension.
