A new study says this breakfast staple can slow down how fast you age
A recent Japanese study published in the journal Aging explored the impact of daily plain yogurt consumption on biological aging. The 12-week trial involved 48 overweight Japanese men aged 50 to 74. Half of the participants ate 100 grams of plain yogurt with the probiotic Bifidobacterium longum BB536 daily. These men also received dietary advice and were instructed on moderate exercise. The control group maintained their usual habits. Researchers used the DunedinPACE tool to measure the pace of aging. The yogurt-eating group showed a significant reduction in their aging pace, averaging 2.2%. This slowdown was independent of weight loss, BMI changes, or the exact amount of exercise logged. Improvements were also noted in a DNA marker associated with kidney function. The study suggests the anti-aging benefit might stem from the combined effect of probiotics, diet, and exercise. However, the researchers emphasized that larger, long-term trials are needed for confirmation. This adds to research on fermented dairy products and their role in healthy aging. A caveat is that a dairy company funded the research.
