A small group of Dems looks to break from their party on ICE funding

A handful of House Democrats are poised to defy their party's leadership by voting for a bill to fund the Department of Homeland Security and ICE. This bill is expected to pass with Republican support, potentially weakening Democrats' efforts to limit ICE's activities. House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries opposes the bill, citing Republican resistance to Democratic suggestions for ICE oversight. Representatives Henry Cuellar and Jared Golden have indicated they will likely vote for the funding, emphasizing the need for law enforcement resources. Several other swing-district Democrats remained undecided before the vote. One Democrat anticipates a limited number of party members supporting the bill, largely due to concerns about recent events. Jeffries has criticized ICE, stating the agency operates in a lawless manner. He acknowledged potential defections, emphasizing that individual members vote according to their district's interests. Jeffries asserts the Democratic Party is a coalition, not a cult, and therefore, lacks complete unanimity on issues.
