African football hit by fresh allegations over general secretary’s Caf conduct

Pierre-Alain Mounguengui, the Gabonese FA president, was elected to the CAF executive committee in 2023. He faced accusations of failing to address widespread sexual abuse allegations within Gabonese football. These allegations, initially reported in 2021, involved the sexual abuse and rape of young footballers. Mounguengui denies the accusations, emphasizing he's not accused of abuse himself. Despite the pending investigation, CAF's general secretary allegedly dismissed recommendations against his eligibility. The general secretary, Veron Mosengo-Omba, seemingly ignored calls for action on the accusations. Mounguengui previously spent six months in custody due to the case in Gabon. The CAF president, Patrice Motsepe, visited Mounguengui while he was in custody. A final decision on Mounguengui's case is still pending nearly four years later. The situation raises concerns regarding the handling of abuse allegations within African football.
