AI, ex-Soviet engineers, and the Holy Grail of rocketry: Inside the bold bet to rival SpaceX
Aspire Space Technologies, led by CEO Stan Rudenko, is collaborating with Leap 71, a Dubai-based computational engineering startup, to build a fully reusable orbital rocket called Oryx. The goal is to make space launches cheaper and more accessible, potentially disrupting SpaceX's dominance in the commercial space economy. The Oryx rocket will utilize an aerospike engine, which uses an exhaust cone instead of an exhaust bell, allowing it to work at any altitude. This design has been a decades-old dream in the aerospace industry, but it has been challenging to implement due to the need for intricate internal cooling channels. Leap 71's AI model, Noyron, has helped to overcome this challenge by autonomously designing the cooling system. The team has partnered with HBD, a Shanghai-based manufacturer, to 3D-print the aerospike engine, which has been successfully manufactured and is now ready for hot-fire testing. The biggest challenge currently facing the team is finding a suitable testing site, but they are exploring options in the United Arab Emirates and Kazakhstan. If successful, the Oryx rocket could significantly reduce launch prices, with estimates suggesting a cost of $200 per kilogram, compared to the current $2,500 to $3,000 per kilogram. The Oryx rocket is designed to be fully reusable, with the ability to fly, land, and turn around rapidly, providing a dedicated high-frequency flight schedule and helping to absorb the launch backlog. The team plans to conduct a full-scale engine test in late 2026 and aims to have the first flight of the Oryx rocket in 2031.
