AI-Powered Browser Just Generates Every Website From Scratch

A Google DeepMind engineer named Vidy Thatte developed a novel browser called Gem. Instead of loading actual webpages, Gem uses Google's Gemini 3.5 Flash Lite model to generate content from URLs on demand. This means it doesn't fetch existing sites but creates interpretations or entirely new ones. The core idea is that generating a page can be as fast and cost-effective as loading one. Gem requires users to provide their own Gemini API key for it to function. Usage is then billed to the user's account, though a free tier is available to start. Despite being a side project, Gem offers numerous stylistic remixing options for generated pages. These options can dramatically alter the appearance and even the content of the rendered page. While impressive, Gem can generate fabricated details for non-existent sites or even rewrite content from real ones. For example, it created a fabricated LinkedIn profile with invented details.
