Amazon has agreed to acquire DuckLabs, the company behind the open-source DuckDB database, integrating the team into Amazon Web Services. DuckLabs' employees, including co-founders Hannes Muhleisen and Mark Raasveldt, will join AWS and continue leading the project from Amsterdam. The financial terms of the acquisition were not disclosed, with the deal expected to close soon, likely in early September. Jordan Tigani, CEO of MotherDuck, views this acquisition as a typical Amazon strategy to capitalize on popular open-source projects by offering them as services. He suggests Amazon's goal is to leverage DuckDB's growing popularity to drive more compute on its infrastructure, thereby increasing revenue. Tigani ultimately believes the deal could strengthen DuckDB, as Amazon has an incentive to maintain its open and widely adopted status. This move allows Amazon to capture business from a successful open-source project.
