America's Cryptocurrency 'Clarity Act' Fails Spectacularly, Despite Hundreds of Millions in Industry Lobbying
The crypto industry's primary legislative goal recently failed in the Senate by a narrow procedural vote. This significant defeat occurred because the motion to advance the bill required 60 votes, but only garnered 49. The bill aimed to shift most cryptocurrency trading away from securities regulators, a key objective for companies like Coinbase. Despite substantial lobbying efforts and campaign spending by the crypto industry, the bill was opposed by both Democrats and some Republicans. Democrats cited insufficient measures to address potential dealings by former President Trump as a reason for their opposition. Some Republican lawmakers also voted no due to pressure from community banks concerned about high-yield crypto accounts. Concerns about leniency and a lack of safeguards intensified after President Trump's significant earnings from crypto were disclosed. Analysts predict the bill may not be revisited until 2030. However, crypto firms are expected to leverage Trump-appointed regulators at the SEC, CFTC, and Treasury. These agencies are anticipated to implement industry-friendly rules, which could allow the crypto sector to further integrate into the financial system before future administrations potentially enact stricter regulations.
