An Apple alum revamped GM’s truck interface for the screen fatigue era

General Motors is introducing a redesigned user interface in its 2027 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 and GMC Sierra 1500 trucks. This new system balances analog buttons and knobs with thoughtfully configured screens, avoiding the common issue of excessive screen real estate. Sebastian Bauer, GM's head of human interface design, emphasizes a focus on essential information presented at the right moments. Bauer, with prior experience at design giants like Apple and Google, has spent two years refining this interface. He highlights the importance of rigor and attention to detail, learned from his tech industry background, in creating an emotional connection for users. The interface features screens that integrate smoothly into the dashboard, complemented by a concise set of analog controls for common functions. While the screens collectively span significant space, they are strategically placed to avoid overwhelming the driver, with a passenger screen designed to be invisible to the driver. The primary focus is on displaying streamlined information, with the main cluster showing speed and engine data, and the center screen prioritizing navigation and audio controls. This design aims to provide information and experiences intuitively, akin to an open-concept home layout. Bauer also stresses the importance of retaining familiar elements to leverage users' existing muscle memory and avoid cognitive overload. This adaptable interface is seen as a scalable solution that can be tailored to various GM vehicle types across its portfolio.
