Another 'Violating' Oil Tanker Caught Fire East Of Hormuz Strait: Iran Navy
Iran's navy announced it disabled a tanker that caught fire in the Hormuz Strait area, potentially due to a sea mine or direct attack. The tanker was reportedly attempting to cross a restricted zone with its tracking systems off. Iranian naval surveillance teams identified the vessel during a routine patrol. The Iranian Navy asserts it maintains full control and supervision of the Strait of Hormuz. Social media images have emerged showing the alleged tanker ablaze. This incident follows approximately 25 Iranian attacks on regional shipping in October. Last summer, the US Navy claimed to have demined the Strait of Hormuz, a assertion Iran now appears to be challenging. A Singapore-flagged container ship recently sank in the Strait of Hormuz after being hit by an unknown projectile. Its 21 crew members were safely evacuated. Iranian officials have issued warnings to ships transiting the Hormuz Strait, threatening consequences for uncoordinated passage.
