Anthropic Loses Appeals Court Bid To Temporarily Block Pentagon Blacklisting

Anthropic's request to temporarily halt a Pentagon blacklisting has been rejected by a federal appeals court. This means Anthropic cannot currently secure Defense Department contracts. The court prioritized the government's need for crucial AI technology, particularly during ongoing military operations. Anthropic will face financial harm, but the court deemed this lesser than the potential disruption to the government. Another court has allowed other federal agencies to continue using Anthropic's AI, Claude, for the time being. The situation creates a split, barring Anthropic from DOD contracts while allowing use by other agencies and defense contractors for non-DOD projects. The appeals court acknowledged Anthropic may suffer harm, but emphasized its financial nature and lack of chilled speech. The court emphasized the need for a swift resolution to the case. Anthropic expressed gratitude that the court acknowledged the need for a quick resolution. Anthropic remains confident the courts will rule the supply chain designations unlawful. The company seeks to work collaboratively with the government to ensure safe AI benefits all citizens.
