Anthropic Reinvents Source Control As Claude Floods the World With Code
Anthropic experienced a massive surge in code generation from its AI, Claude, overwhelming its Git-based system. To address this, they developed a custom, centralized source-control system named Scion. Code merges at Anthropic escalated from approximately 2,500 per day in May 2026 to over 30,000 by September. The company anticipates this rapid growth in code production will continue as bottlenecks are removed. Scion employs a monorepo structure and prioritizes server-side operations, with queries accessible via API. This design caters to AI agents, reducing the need for local repositories and synchronization. In Scion, the fundamental unit of work is a "changeset," which records file modifications and content-addressed pointers to compressed file data. Unlike Git's tree pointers, a changeset lists changed files relative to its parent. Anthropic believes its solution is not suitable for general use and will not be open-sourced. However, they shared their approach, predicting similar scaling issues will arise in other organizations soon. The development of this custom infrastructure was facilitated by substantial funding.
