Apple has changed the label for Lake Ontario to "Lake America" in its Maps application. This move follows a similar decision by Google, which updated its U.S. maps over the weekend. President Trump reportedly requested Apple to make the switch last week. The timing of Apple's change is less than a week after Trump's executive order to rename the body of water. Last year, Apple also renamed the Gulf of Mexico and Mount Denali according to Trump's executive orders. It is currently unclear if Apple's change is geographically specific as Google's is for U.S. users. Canadian users and international users outside of Canada see different labels in Google Maps. Google stated its decision was based on updates to the U.S. Geographic Names Information System. Trump does not have the authority to unilaterally rename shared bodies of water, and Canada has stated they will not recognize "Lake America." MapQuest, however, has stated they will not be changing the lake's name. MapQuest has experienced a significant engagement boost following their stance on the naming issue.
