Over thirty years in investment, the author observed that consistently outperforming individuals were the most adaptive. These adaptive people could mentally simulate actions, course-correct rapidly, and adjust without ego. They possess a common set of decision-making tools and processes, which the author calls high Adaptability Quotient (AQ). This AQ is not innate but a learnable discipline, like an operating system for making better decisions under uncertainty. In an era where expertise's half-life is shrinking and industries change rapidly, the primary advantage is learning faster than the world changes. The rise of AI and algorithms encourages complacency, a greater threat than a machine uprising. The author advocates for an "adaptive uprising" to reclaim human agency and become fluent in change. This involves mastering uncertainty and turning chaos into an advantage. The future, for now, is still something we can actively build through this adaptive approach.
