Architects are sitting on a data gold mine, and Anthropic and other frontier AI labs can’t get to it

Architecture firms are currently developing their own AI capabilities because the necessary training data is not readily available online. These firms are hiring data scientists and machine learning specialists to build bespoke AI tools and even niche large language models. Many architects recognize this as a critical moment to adapt to evolving client expectations and a competitive landscape. The explosion of AI tools has fundamentally changed how firms approach design, moving beyond mere optimization. These tools accelerate concept development and simplify complex translations from design to construction. For instance, one firm used AI to analyze potential tenants for a building in Amsterdam, contributing to winning the project. Firms are also automating tedious tasks, like tallying elements in floor plans, though AI currently lacks human designer expertise for nuanced decisions. Large firms are creating AI "sandboxes" for experimentation and developing internal tools for site analysis and predictive floor plan insights. These efforts aim to augment designers' work and speed up processes like creating project proposals with AI-generated films. Ultimately, firms believe sustained advantage will come from effectively combining domain data with creativity, not just access to models.
