IBM's plan to replace thousands of roles with AI appears to be more about outsourcing jobs to India, which could harm the company's competency. This view was shared by several IBM employees who contacted The Register after a report on the company's latest layoffs. The employees, who wish to remain anonymous, are senior technologists with access to company communications. They claim that IBM's AI is not capable of replacing human workers, and some of the people who could improve the AI have been let go. According to the employees, IBM management has been pushing for automation and AI use over the past four years. However, the company's AI tools are not yet able to replace senior-level staff. The employees believe that IBM's goal is to reduce costs by promoting younger, lower-paid workers and using AI to perform tasks. But this plan has yet to be successfully implemented within the company. IBM's CEO, Arvind Krishna, had previously committed to replacing around 7,800 jobs with AI, but the employees question the feasibility of this plan. The company's approach to automation and AI use has led to concerns about its impact on organizational competency.
