The author, a healthy woman under 50, contracted ocular shingles at the age of 43. Initially, medical professionals expressed surprise due to her age, as shingles is conventionally considered a disease of the elderly or immunocompromised. The author was informed about the potential cost of the condition. She discovered that intense exercise could be a contributing factor to developing shingles. She experienced symptoms including a red spot on her nose, a swollen eye, and a severe headache. Urgent care initially suspected shingles, with the nurse also commenting on her youth for the condition. Following instructions, she went to the ER due to the emergency nature of shingles near the eye. An ophthalmologist at the ER also remarked on her age in relation to the diagnosis. This experience challenges the common medical understanding of who is susceptible to shingles. The author highlights that healthy women under 50 are now facing increased risk.
