Aussie Climate Agency Concedes It Did Not Scrutinize Data Behind Major Climate Risk Report
The Australian Climate Service (ACS) admitted they did not scrutinize data from a Climate Council report used in the National Climate Risk Assessment. This assessment warned of dire consequences for Australia if climate change is not addressed. Liberal Senator Dean Smith questioned the ACS during a Senate Estimates hearing about the accuracy of the Climate Council's data. The ACS general manager stated their agency only reviewed the report for accurate reflection, not data verification. Smith criticized this approach, arguing that citing reports without checking their accuracy is unscientific. He also questioned why a Climate Council estimate of $571 billion in property value losses by 2030 was omitted from the assessment. The ACS cited consistency as the reason, prioritizing 2050 and 2090 scenarios. Smith disputed this, finding the 2030 figure more relevant and questioned its believability. The ACS clarified that the figures were not predictions but assessments of potential impacts.
