Google Meet is rolling out automatic room check-in for users joining meetings in companion mode on mobile devices. This feature simplifies joining by using ultrasound proximity detection. When a phone or tablet is in a conference room, it can detect an ultrasound signal from Google Meet hardware. This allows for automatic check-in to the room without manual steps. The feature is available on both Android and iOS devices. Specific minimum app build versions are required for Meet and Gmail on both platforms. Administrators can enable or disable this feature at the room level, with it being on by default. End users will see a highlighted companion mode entry point when proximity detection is active. Once a user joins in companion mode, they will be automatically checked in to the room. Troubleshooting tips are available in the Help Center if proximity check-in is not functioning, and manual check-in remains an option. The rollout is expected to be complete by September 10, 2026, for Android and gradually for iOS starting September 9, 2026. This feature is available to all Google Workspace customers and Workspace Individual subscribers who use Google Meet hardware.
