Behind the scenes: Meta still on prowl for AI talent

Meta has hired Andrew Tulloch, co-founder of Thinking Machines, indicating their continued pursuit of top AI talent. This acquisition is a significant move for Mark Zuckerberg's AI objectives. However, Tulloch's compensation package is reportedly less than a previous offer he declined. He will be joining Meta's new TBD Labs unit, led by Chief AI Officer Alexandr Wang. Tulloch is a respected machine learning expert with prior experience at Meta and OpenAI. He was a prominent figure at Thinking Machines, a startup co-founded by Mira Murati. Earlier reports suggested Meta had attempted to recruit Tulloch with a substantial offer, potentially nearing $1.5 billion, which Meta had disputed. The company has invested billions in its AI hiring efforts. This includes a significant investment in Scale AI, which facilitated Wang's recruitment. Meta and OpenAI are currently focusing on advancements in social AI video capabilities.
