Beyond individual productivity: rethinking AI strategy in product teams
The author, a UX designer with development experience, initially feared generative AI would make designers irrelevant as developers rapidly adopted it. Their three-month thesis project investigated this, involving AI experiments, surveys, and interviews with designers and developers. Contrary to initial fears, the research revealed that AI currently speeds up individual tasks rather than improving team collaboration. AI tools augment rather than replace designers and developers, sometimes creating inconsistencies or being difficult to integrate. While AI adoption is widespread, it often lacks a cohesive strategy within organizations. The author concluded that AI doesn't fundamentally change collaboration but makes existing collaborative principles even more critical. Effective collaboration frameworks and communication are essential to leverage AI's potential. The author recommends evolving from individual AI adoption to team-wide transformation through governance, process, and operational support. This involves auditing practices, creating usage charters, guided experimentation, and shared training. AI is still exploratory, and teams that thoughtfully integrate it into their collaborative practices will benefit most. AI creates new opportunities for teams willing to experiment with their collaboration.
