House Democrats Becca Balint and Pramila Jayapal are demanding answers from Google and Meta regarding ICE's recruitment ads on their platforms. The lawmakers accuse the companies of complicity in promoting rhetoric used by white nationalist and neo-Nazi groups. ICE has run numerous ads, including those echoing extremist slogans and offering large signing bonuses. These ads have appeared on Google, Facebook, and Instagram, some featuring provocative imagery and language. The politicians argue that Big Tech's ad systems are normalizing white supremacist propaganda. One example is an Instagram ad using lyrics from a song popular in neo-Nazi circles. The letters sent to the companies highlight concerns about the platforms' role in the ICE recruitment campaign. ICE has also used LinkedIn for job postings. The companies haven't yet responded to the lawmakers' inquiries, and Meta and Google have declined comment. This is not the first attempt by politicians to influence platform content.
