Blue states mount vaccine defense against RFK Jr.
Several blue states are defying Robert Kennedy Jr.'s vaccine restrictions, leading to conflicting state policies on vaccinations. This creates public confusion and potential inefficiencies in handling public health crises. A state-by-state approach is less effective than a unified federal policy, experts argue. Democratic governors see political advantages in opposing Kennedy's policies, potentially contributing to a trend of "soft secession." Massachusetts and New Mexico have already taken action to ensure broad vaccine access. Other states like California, Oregon, Washington, Colorado, Pennsylvania, and Illinois are also taking steps to establish their own vaccine guidelines and procurement methods. This divergence is fueled by distrust in the CDC's current leadership and recommendations. The federal government, however, maintains that the CDC remains the authoritative source for immunization guidelines. Florida, conversely, is moving in the opposite direction by ending school vaccine mandates. This patchwork approach contrasts with the historical U.S. public health system's reliance on federal guidance.
