Brain Activity Reveals the Melodies That People Imagine
Researchers have found evidence suggesting that brain signals can reveal the pitches of notes in imagined musical melodies. This discovery was made by studying epilepsy patients who had electrodes on their brain surfaces for monitoring. Participants listened to the beginning of familiar tunes and then imagined and hummed the subsequent melodies. Their brain activity contained information about the relative pitches within these imagined musical pieces. A model developed by the research team could decode these relative pitch classes, like do, re, mi, rather than absolute pitches. This ability is significant because melody recognition often relies on the relationships between notes, not their specific absolute frequencies. The model's predictions over time helped recreate melodic changes that mirrored the imagined songs' structures. This indicates that the brain processes and encodes musical pitch information even when no sound is present. The study offers insights into how the brain internally represents and manipulates musical ideas. This advanced understanding could have implications for music cognition research and therapeutic applications.
