Build the world we want: Solutions for the next decade

The author's decade-long experience has shown that finding technologically-driven social innovators is achievable, but ensuring their solutions become lasting is the greater challenge. True impact comes from solutions that integrate into existing systems, markets, and policies. MIT Solve's recent call for innovators seeking scalable, responsible solutions attracted over 1,000 applicants globally. Three key patterns emerged from the finalists' work. Firstly, technology is employed subtly to address specific problems, with AI often serving as an invisible engine rather than the main product, keeping humans in control. Secondly, proximity to the community facing the problem is highlighted as a crucial advantage, leading to designs built on trust and local understanding. Finally, innovators are focused on rebuilding the underlying systems that perpetuate problems, rather than just offering a singular solution. This involves repairing broken connections in supply chains, referral systems, and financial flows. These efforts, though behind-the-scenes scaffolding, are essential for turning good products into enduring ones. The next decade will reward those who can foster the conditions for good solutions to thrive and transform systems.
