Burger King experienced a net decrease of 51 U.S. locations in fiscal year 2025, ending with 6,650 stores. During this period, 87 new U.S. locations were opened, but 103 were closed. A significant change occurred with Restaurant Brands International acquiring Carrols Restaurant Group, converting 1,023 franchise locations to company-owned. This acquisition dramatically increased the number of company-owned stores. The company also restructured its existing company-owned portfolio throughout 2025. Florida saw the most franchised openings and closures, while Michigan and New York had new company-owned openings. Nationally, Burger King sales are on the rise, with U.S. same-store sales increasing by 8.5% in the second quarter of 2026. In a strategic move, Burger King recently refreshed its iconic Whopper to enhance the customer experience. The chain has also surpassed Wendy's to become the second-largest burger chain in the U.S. by systemwide sales. Burger King projects opening 40 new U.S. locations in 2026, with a continued expansion internationally.
