C-SPAN lands a streaming deal with YouTube TV and Hulu

C-SPAN has reached an agreement to have its three channels available on YouTube TV and Hulu's live television service. This deal resolves a dispute that had impacted C-SPAN's revenue during the shift away from traditional cable. Both streaming services will pay C-SPAN the same subscriber fee as traditional cable and satellite providers. C-SPAN will maintain its policy of not airing advertisements on its television channels. Congress had previously intervened, passing a resolution urging Alphabet and Disney, the parent companies of YouTube and Hulu respectively, to include C-SPAN in their offerings. This was partly because congressional sessions and hearings constitute a significant portion of C-SPAN's programming. The agreement is crucial as the number of homes subscribing to traditional pay TV has declined. Many of these former cable subscribers now use streaming services like YouTube TV and Hulu, which previously did not carry C-SPAN. C-SPAN's revenue has significantly decreased in recent years, falling from nearly $64 million in 2019 to $45.4 million in 2023. This new distribution deal is expected to provide millions more Americans access to C-SPAN's unfiltered political coverage.
