California, 6 Other States Sue Trump Admin Over Funding Cuts To Immigration, Race Projects

California and six other states have sued the Trump administration for cutting federal funding from programs related to immigration, race, and gender ideology, deeming them not in the national interest. The states accuse the administration of illegally withholding $810 million approved by Congress. This lawsuit escalates a long-standing battle between President Trump and Congress over national spending control. The White House stated these cuts target "wasteful and harmful government spending that does not benefit American citizens." Trump utilized a "pocket rescission" to cancel funds, a tactic used only once before in nearly 50 years. A significant portion of the withdrawn funds, $567 million, went to NGOs serving refugees and non-citizens, with the White House characterizing some as "pro-illegal immigration programs." Specifically, $2.1 million was cut from Lutheran Immigration and Refugee Service Inc., an organization the White House labelled an "open-borders NGO." An additional $40 million was cut from Southwest Key Programs, which faced allegations of sexual abuse against migrant children. The states argue that these actions undermine Congress's exclusive power over federal spending and violate the Constitution's separation of powers. California Attorney General Rob Bonta criticized Trump's "blatant disregard for the basic Constitutional framework." Other cuts include a $15 million Community Relations initiative promoting "radical critical race theory and gender ideology" and $70 million from "Woke International Education" programs.
