California's Governor Wants Worker Protections from AI. But FSF Thinks Kill Switches are 'Dangerous Precedent'
California Governor Gavin Newsom has signed new laws to protect workers from artificial intelligence. These laws prohibit employers from using AI to analyze workers' emotions via biometric data. They also mandate written notice to employees if AI causes mass layoffs and prevent AI from being the sole basis for termination. Additionally, a new law requires AI chatbot operators to conduct risk assessments beforehand. Newsom also issued an executive order for the state to consult experts on improving AI oversight. The state is tracking AI's economic impact to adapt job training programs and has launched an AI Unemployment Tracker. Furthermore, Newsom's executive orders explore proposals like requiring AI companies to develop a "kill switch" for advanced models. While some see this as a positive step, others raise concerns about centralized control over such technology. The Free Software Foundation argues that users deserve complete control over their computing and are wary of giving a few entities the power of a kill switch. They emphasize the importance of user freedom and dignity over centralized AI control. Newsom also ordered state agencies to continue using the term "artificial intelligence" instead of "super intelligence."
