Can Red-Light Therapy Treat Brain Injuries?

University of Utah researchers are investigating intranasal transcranial photobiomodulation (itPBM), a form of red-light therapy. This treatment shows promise for reducing brain inflammation and enhancing cognitive function, mood, and motor performance. Former BYU football star Larry Carr credits itPBM with helping his brain injury recovery, stemming from years of head impacts. The research team, including Elisabeth Wilde, Ph.D., has found the results "striking." This medical-grade therapy differs from superficial red-light applications. Studies have involved individuals from diverse backgrounds, not just athletes. A recent Journal of Neurotrauma publication followed 26 BYU football players over a season. The findings suggest itPBM could protect neurological health without impacting playing time. While not yet definitively proven through large clinical trials, some outside experts consider the findings promising. Researchers report 14 peer-reviewed studies link itPBM to improved cognitive and motor functions, with brain imaging showing reduced inflammation. A key study on BYU players revealed that those treated experienced reduced brain inflammation compared to an untreated group. Treated participants also reported fewer symptoms of depression, anxiety, and PTSD, alongside better cognitive abilities. Overall, itPBM appears to offer a neuroprotective effect.
