Catch up on unread messages within a conversation in Google Chat

Gemini in Google Chat is expanding its summarization capabilities. Previously, it could summarize unread conversations in the Chat home view and files shared within chats. Now, users can also catch up on unread messages within direct messages, group conversations, and spaces. When a conversation has many unread messages, a summary card will appear proactively. For fewer unread messages, users can manually generate a summary by clicking a summarize button. This new functionality aims to help users quickly get up to speed on recent discussions. Initially, this feature will be available on the web, with a mobile rollout planned for a later date. Admins need to ensure smart features and personalization are enabled for their users. End users can access summaries by clicking the button, and can control proactive summaries through Chat settings. The feature will begin rolling out gradually to Rapid Release domains on August 12, 2025, and to Scheduled Release domains on August 25, 2025. Availability extends to various Google Workspace editions, including Business and Enterprise tiers, as well as specific Gemini add-ons.
