CDC purge hits 600 workers in key offices despite reversals
Approximately 600 CDC employees in key departments have been laid off as a result of the Trump administration's actions. These layoffs have targeted offices responsible for health statistics, injury prevention, congressional outreach, and human resources. While some termination notices were rescinded, the remaining cuts could harm public health efforts, impacting the agency's daily function. The layoffs also affect programs like the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey and an ethics office. Employee unions are challenging the firings in court, alleging unlawful abuse of power. Critics worry these cuts, coupled with prior reductions and recent events, will weaken the CDC's ability to protect the public. Some officials have also cited a "coding error" as the reason for the mass terminations. The Epidemic Intelligence Service and the Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report experienced reversals of the initial cuts. Former CDC officials express concern about the long-term consequences for public health. The unions are asking a federal court to invalidate the firings.
