Centrist Democrats push for softer constraints on Trump's war powers in Iran

Centrist House Democrats introduced a war powers resolution offering the Trump administration more flexibility on Iran than the measure proposed by House leadership. This alternative allows a 30-day window to end hostilities and maintain a defensive troop presence in the region. The move highlights the reluctance some hawkish Democrats have towards the original resolution, introduced by Representatives Khanna and Massie. The centrist resolution aims to avoid a potentially dangerous immediate withdrawal, ensuring a safe transition. Proponents, including Representatives Gottheimer, Landsman, and others, believe it prevents signaling retreat to adversaries. They seek a timely and appropriate Congressional response. This contrasts with the Khanna-Massie resolution, which demands immediate withdrawal. House Minority Leader Jeffries, backing the original measure, hasn't commented directly on the alternative. He is currently focused on the original resolution scheduled for next week. Some undecided members are expected to attend a classified briefing before making a final decision. The Khanna spokesperson did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
