CFPB Orders Remote Employees To Relocate To Washington Or Lose Jobs
The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) has mandated that hundreds of its remote employees relocate to Washington D.C. Approximately 450 workers have been given a July 14th deadline to commit to the move. Those who agree will begin reporting to the new headquarters on September 6th. Employees who refuse to relocate or fail to respond will be terminated from the agency. The CFPB's new headquarters has space for about 550 employees, which is roughly half of its current workforce. The employee union views this order as a de facto workforce reduction, predicting many will resign instead of moving. Some employees have reportedly been exempted from this requirement, though no public explanation has been provided. The CFPB itself has not issued any public statements regarding these relocation notices. This directive could lead to a significant decrease in the bureau's staff.
