Changes to membership roles in Google Chat spaces to enable more flexible permissions

Follow
Google Chat is introducing a new owner role for spaces, in addition to managers and members, to better distribute management responsibilities. Existing space managers will be automatically upgraded to the owner role, retaining full control. A new manager role will be created with most owner permissions, excluding the ability to delete the space or promote users to owner. The member role will remain as is. Both owners and managers can now configure permissions for members, managers, and owners within space settings. These settings include controls for features like the '@all' function, app integration, and history settings. This feature will be enabled by default for all spaces and cannot be controlled by administrators. End users can consult the Help Center for more information on space roles and settings. The rollout begins for Rapid Release domains on September 29, 2025, and for Scheduled Release domains on October 16, 2025. This update will be available to all Google Workspace customers, Workspace Individual subscribers, and users with personal Google accounts.
