ChatGPT, iPhone History Found for Uber Driver Charged With Starting California's Palisades Fire
Jonathan Rinderknecht, a 29-year-old man, has been arrested as a suspect in the Pacific Palisades fire. The fire, allegedly started on New Year's Day, resulted in 12 deaths and the destruction of over 6,000 homes. According to officials, Rinderknecht worked in California and moved to Florida shortly after the incident. The Lachman fire smoldered underground after being initially suppressed. Rinderknecht is accused of starting the fire after completing an Uber ride, using an open flame. Evidence from his digital devices includes a ChatGPT-generated image of a burning city. Phone data placed him at the fire's origin, contradicting his claims to investigators. He also repeatedly called 911 with mobile reception issues, even recording a conversation with a dispatcher. Investigators found evidence the suspect wanted to seem like he was trying to assist in stopping the fire. Furthermore, he queried ChatGPT about liability for cigarette-caused fires and images of burning forests.
