ChatGPT just dropped below half of AI-app users — here's how I split work across the big three
ChatGPT's share of AI app users has fallen below fifty percent, now at about forty-six percent according to Sensor Tower. Gemini holds approximately twenty-eight percent, and Claude around ten percent of app users. However, ChatGPT still leads in web traffic with over 1.1 billion monthly users, maintaining its overall number one position. This shift indicates an end to the singular AI app habit among users. The author, a developer, now uses different AIs for specific tasks. Claude is preferred for coding tasks like refactoring and understanding complex codebases. Gemini is integrated into Google products, making it convenient for email, search, and tasks within Google tabs. It benefits from zero installation friction as it is pre-installed on many devices. ChatGPT remains the go-to for general questions and quick drafting due to its user-friendly interface. Other AI models are gaining traction due to their distribution, especially Gemini within Google's ecosystem. User trust also plays a role, with some switching from ChatGPT after certain partnership announcements. The fundamental question has evolved from finding the "best AI" to identifying the "best AI for a specific task." This necessitates task-based routing, which is becoming the standard workflow for developers. Increased competition is driving faster feature development and lower prices across AI services.
