The European Commission has designated Reddit, Roblox, and ChatGPT as very large online platforms or search engines under the Digital Services Act. This classification subjects them to higher scrutiny and increased obligations within the European Union. These services now must comply with rules designed to protect EU citizens online. They are required to establish points of contact, report criminal offenses, and ensure transparency in content moderation and advertising. A key obligation is to identify and assess systemic risks like those affecting public security and fundamental rights. ChatGPT is categorized as a search engine due to its web-searching capabilities, while Reddit and Roblox are deemed online platforms for facilitating user-generated content. These designated services must also share data with authorities and implement internal compliance functions. The new requirements for ChatGPT, Reddit, and Roblox are effective by January 2027. This designation follows previous challenges, like Amazon's unsuccessful legal attempt to overturn its own classification. In total, 28 services are now under this enhanced supervision, including major platforms like TikTok and X. The EU vows to continue closely monitoring and designating services that meet the threshold for increased oversight.
