Cherokee Nation In The US Bans Data Center Development

The Cherokee Nation has banned new hyperscale data center development on its tribal lands. Chief Chuck Hoskin announced this decision due to concerns about resource and cultural impacts. He emphasized the need for early and transparent engagement with companies regarding these projects. Despite the ban, a survey revealed that 64 percent of Cherokee Nation citizens supported hyperscale data center construction. However, only 14 percent were in favor, and 22 percent were undecided, indicating a divided opinion. Two specific data center projects, Project Clydesdale and Project Mustang, are currently in development within the reservation. The nation also expressed interest in maintaining access to colocation and cloud services for various governmental and business operations. This includes critical systems for disaster recovery and tribal registration. The ban highlights the growing tribal concerns surrounding the environmental and cultural implications of large-scale data infrastructure.
