Client-side encryption now has full support for Google Sheets
Google Sheets now fully supports client-side encryption, enhancing data security and compliance. This update covers import, export, and decryption functionalities for Sheets, improving interoperability with Microsoft Office formats. Customers can now seamlessly work with client-side encrypted Sheets and their Microsoft counterparts. Admins can configure this feature at the organizational unit level, with detailed guidance available in the Help Center. End users require no specific action as the feature will be available by default for those with client-side encryption already set up. The process involves using tools like Google Vault for exports and a dedicated decrypter tool for decryption. Additionally, a converter tool allows for transforming exported and decrypted Google Sheets into Microsoft Office formats. The rollout will occur gradually for both Rapid Release and Scheduled Release domains, beginning in September 2025. This feature is available to specific Google Workspace editions, including Enterprise Plus, Education Standard and Plus, and Frontline Plus. The update aims to provide robust data protection and greater flexibility for users handling sensitive information.
