Commercial Signage on the Façade of Gruta 77 in Madrid, Spain

Gruta 77, a beloved rock and roll venue and rehearsal space in Madrid's Carabanchel neighborhood, has been a cornerstone for underground music for almost thirty years. The venue is slated to close its doors permanently at the end of 2026. Its façade has also become a canvas for art, recently displaying Hijas de Rojas, an installation of vintage signs from businesses that have closed. These rescued signs, collected by Paco Graco, represent a tribute to Madrid's vanishing commercial heritage. The collective secured these signs from businesses that had disappeared, transforming Gruta 77's exterior into a memorial. This installation includes items like the sign from Bar Lozano, a notable establishment in Malasaña. Carabanchel itself is experiencing significant changes due to gentrification, with rising property prices and new developments. These transformations are altering the neighborhood's character and pushing out long-time residents and businesses. For many, Gruta 77 is more than just a music venue; it is an integral part of Carabanchel's cultural fabric. Its impending closure signifies the loss of another element of the barrio's alternative identity as gentrification progresses.
