This dramatic rise prompts the County Manager, John Vithoulkas, to email thousands of employees requesting electricity conservation measures. Henrico County has become a major data center hub, with 37 existing facilities and plans for 17 more, even considering converting Civil War battlefields. The proliferation of data centers, including Meta's, is attributed to the county's proximity to Washington D.C. and available land. To combat the escalating energy expenses, Vithoulkas urged employees to implement simple conservation tactics across county government and school facilities. These measures include turning off lights and computers when leaving workspaces. Employees are also advised to adjust blinds to manage heat and unplug unused electrical items. The email specifically requests limiting the use of space heaters, which can incur substantial electricity costs annually.
