Cryptologist DJB Alleges NSA is Pushing an End to Backup Algorithms for Post-Quantum Cryptography
Daniel J. Bernstein, a cryptography expert, accuses the NSA of attempting to manipulate post-quantum cryptography standards. He argues that the NSA and GCHQ are pushing for a shift from hybrid cryptographic systems to solely post-quantum solutions. Bernstein suggests this weakening is a strategic move to control the commercial market, leveraging the U.S. military budget for influence. He points to statements from NSA officials and Cisco, indicating a preference for single-layer post-quantum encryption. Bernstein is concerned about NSA's ability to shape the landscape by purchasing single encryption, while secretly using double encryption for sensitive data. He criticizes the Internet Engineering Task Force's (IETF) decision to adopt non-hybrid encryption for TLS, despite significant opposition. Bernstein believes the IETF failed to achieve a sufficient consensus, as a substantial minority voiced concerns. He has filed a formal complaint about the IETF's claims of consensus in adopting the non-hybrid approach. Bernstein also provides detailed analysis on the IETF's decision-making process in a follow up blog post. He fears objections are being suppressed, undermining the integrity of the standardization process.
